How to Change Your Mouse DPI (And What DPI to Use)

DPI is your mouse's sensitivity — how far the cursor moves for each inch you slide the mouse. If your pointer feels too fast, too slow, or you just want to match a pro's aim, the fix is changing your DPI. This guide covers every way to do it, what number to pick, and the one Windows setting people mix up with DPI.

What Does DPI Mean on a Mouse?

DPI stands for dots per inch (some brands call it CPI, counts per inch). It's the number of movement steps the sensor reports for every inch of physical motion:

  • A low DPI (400–800) moves the cursor a short distance per inch — slower, but easier to aim precisely.
  • A high DPI (3200+) moves the cursor far per inch — fast, good for large or high-resolution screens.

Higher is not "better." It's just faster. Most competitive FPS players deliberately run 400–800 DPI because a slower cursor is easier to control. DPI is a hardware setting stored on the mouse, which is why changing it is different from changing pointer speed in Windows (more on that below).

How to Change Your Mouse DPI

There are three routes, depending on your mouse.

1. The DPI Button on the Mouse

Most gaming mice have a small button on the top, near the scroll wheel. Each press cycles to the next preset DPI stage, and many mice flash an LED or briefly change color to show which stage you're on. This is the fastest way to switch on the fly — for example, dropping to a low stage for a precise shot — but the presets themselves are defined in software.

2. In Your Mouse Software

For exact control, set DPI in your manufacturer's app. This is also where you define what each stage of the DPI button does.

  • Logitech — G HUB → select your mouse → Sensitivity (DPI). Add, remove, or drag DPI stages and set a default.
  • Razer — Synapse → PerformanceSensitivity. Toggle sensitivity stages and type an exact value for each.
  • SteelSeries — GG → Engine → CPI. Set the levels and assign the switch button.
  • Corsair — iCUE → select the mouse → DPI. Adjust each preset independently, and separate X/Y DPI if you need it.

Set your value, apply, and it's stored on the mouse — it stays even on another computer.

3. Without Gaming Software

No DPI button and no app? Then your mouse likely has a single fixed DPI you can't change in hardware. What you can change is how fast the cursor feels in the operating system — but that is not the same as DPI, and it's worth understanding why.

Windows "Pointer Speed" Is Not DPI

This is the most common mix-up. In Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Mouse pointer speed, Windows gives you a slider. It does not change your mouse's DPI — it multiplies or divides the movement your mouse already reports, in software. That software scaling can throw off precision and interferes with games that read raw input.

For the cleanest, most consistent aim:

  1. Set the pointer speed slider to the middle (6th of 11 notches), which is 1-to-1 with no scaling.
  2. Turn off "Enhance pointer precision" (that's mouse acceleration).
  3. Do your real sensitivity adjustment with DPI on the mouse instead.

What DPI Should You Use?

There's no single right number, but these are solid starting points by use case:

  • Competitive FPS: 400–800 DPI, paired with a low in-game sensitivity. Nearly all esports pros sit here.
  • General desktop / office: 1000–1600 DPI feels natural on a standard monitor.
  • Large or 4K monitors: 1600–3200 DPI so you're not lifting and repositioning constantly.
  • Design and precision work: 800–1200 DPI with acceleration off for predictable strokes.

After You Change It: Verify

Setting a DPI value doesn't guarantee the sensor actually hits it — cheaper sensors can be several percent off, and Windows scaling can distort the result.
