How to Test If Your Mouse Is Working Properly (Full Checklist)

If your mouse is misbehaving — a button that skips, a cursor that drifts, clicks that register twice — you don't need to guess. Everything about a mouse can be tested in a few minutes, right in your browser, with no downloads. This is the complete checklist I use to test whether a mouse is working properly, from the most common faults to the subtle ones.

Work through it top to bottom. Each step links to a free tool that isolates one part of the mouse.

The 60-Second Quick Check

Short on time? These three catch the majority of real faults:

  1. Buttons — do left, right, middle, and side buttons all register? → Mouse Button Test

  3. Tracking — does the cursor move smoothly with no drift? → Mouse Drift Test

If all three pass, your mouse is almost certainly healthy. For a thorough check, keep going.

1. Test Every Button

Start with the buttons, since a dead or mushy button is the most common complaint. Open the Mouse Button Test and press each button in turn — left, right, middle (the scroll-wheel click), and the two side buttons if your mouse has them. Every press should light up instantly.

  • Nothing happens on a side button? It may be remapped in your mouse software (Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse). Reset it to its default action.

2. Check for Double-Clicking (Chatter)

A worn switch makes a single press register as two clicks — maddening when dragging or selecting. Open the Double Click Test and click slowly, once at a time. If the tool records doubles from single presses, your mouse has chatter. It can sometimes be fixed by cleaning the switch; otherwise the switch needs replacing.

3. Test the Scroll Wheel

Open the Scroll Wheel Test and scroll up and down. Scrolling should be smooth and register in the correct direction with no skipped or reversed steps. A wheel that jumps the wrong way or misses steps usually means a dirty or failing encoder.

4. Verify Click-and-Hold

Dragging files or aiming down sights depends on the button staying held. Open the Mouse Hold Test, press and hold, and confirm the button stays registered the whole time without releasing on its own.

5. Check the Sensor: Drift, Jitter, and Stutter

The sensor is the heart of the mouse. Three faults to rule out:

  • Drift — cursor moves on its own when you're not touching the mouse → Mouse Drift Test
  • Jitter / micro-stutter — the cursor shakes or hitches during steady movement → Mouse Jitter Test
  • Tracking accuracy — the cursor faithfully follows your hand → Mouse Tester Sensor

Always test on a proper cloth or hard mouse pad. Glass and glossy desks confuse optical sensors and cause false faults.

6. Measure DPI and Sensitivity

If the cursor feels too fast or too slow, check your sensitivity. The Mouse DPI Test measures your real DPI using a ruler, and the DPI Calculator converts sensitivity when you switch mice. Remember to turn off "Enhance pointer precision" in Windows for consistent results.

7. Test Polling Rate and Latency

For gaming, responsiveness matters as much as accuracy:

Aim for a steady 1000 Hz polling rate and consistent, low latency. If either is erratic, try a different USB port and disable USB power-saving.

When to Repair vs Replace

  • Double-clicking or a dead button — a switch fault. Worth repairing on an expensive mouse, otherwise replace.
  • Drift or stutter that survives a clean and a new pad — likely a failing sensor. Usually time to replace.
  • High or erratic latency only — often the connection, not the mouse. Change USB port, update drivers, or switch from Bluetooth to a 2.4 GHz dongle before giving up on the mouse.
